What Is SBC?
An SBC is a border device between two voice networks on IP. It is used to connect customer PBX to carriers, enable Microsoft Teams Direct Routing, and bridge SIP Trunks.
Definition
SBC (Session Border Controller) handles security (voice-aware firewall), NAT traversal, topology hiding, codec transcoding, and survivability if a carrier fails.
Usage
Used by organizations connecting multi-carrier SIP Trunks, Microsoft Teams Direct Routing, or multi-site contact centers. Example products: AudioCodes Mediant, Ribbon SBC, Oracle ESBC, Sangoma NetBorder.
Related Concepts
Unlike a regular firewall, an SBC understands SIP / RTP and performs deep packet inspection, defending against voice-specific attacks like INVITE flood and toll fraud.
