What Is G.722?
G.722 is an audio codec providing HD voice (16 KHz wideband) at 64 Kbps, same bandwidth as G.711 but noticeably clearer and more natural sound. It is the most common HD codec on IP phones.
Definition
G.722, standardized by ITU-T in 1988, samples at 16 KHz, 14-bit in two sub-bands compressed to 64 Kbps. Audibly clearer than G.711, especially for male voices and high frequencies.
Usage
Most HD IP phones (Yealink, Polycom, Cisco) support G.722. Used between internal extensions and HD-capable SIP Trunks.
Related Concepts
Variants include G.722.1 (low complexity) and G.722.2 / AMR-WB (3GPP standard, more compressed).
